By now, you’ve heard about the October Pappy Van Winkle heist that’s made headlines across the world. Pappy Van Winkle is so popular its empty bottles command more on eBay than most brands in liquor stores. The theft is concerning, but not a surprise for anybody who covers the industry. People covet this stuff.

In the “wait there’s more” department,  I’ve learned 200 bottles of Pappy 20-year-old was not the only thing that’s recently been stolen from the Pappy franchise. At its grand opening party, the Pappy & Co. clothing line had $2,475 worth of Pappy belts stolen, Carrie Van Winkle Greener told me via email.

Greener runs Old Rip Van Winkle’s latest venture, Pappy & Co., where they sell brand-related clothing and accessories.

“The {belts} were stolen from our launch {October 19} party, where we had a booth selling merchandise from Pappy & Co.,” Greener said. “Not quite as exciting as the distillery.”

Greener says she did not file a police report on the 15 missing belts.

Meanwhile, the stolen Pappy 20-year-old and the thief remain at large. Bardstown High School principal Chris Pickett was identified in a Hardin County liquor store video as a man who wanted to sell several cases of Pappy. Pickett was a person of interest and has since been cleared in stealing $26,000 worth of bourbon.

Earlier this month, the Franklin County Sheriff Department issued a $10,000 reward for information leading to the Pappy thief arrest.

With all the heat in the world on the bourbon thief, the Pappy belt burglar appears to have gotten away with stealing some fine leather.
