Madre Mezcal Introduces New Tequila Blanco
Madre Mezcal introduced Madre Tequila, an additive-free, unaged, tequila blanco made in the spirit of what was once called ‘Vino de Mezcal de Tequila’. Drawing on insights learned from the release of its three mezcal expressions, Madre Tequila is produced in the goal of emphasizing the natural agave flavor within the spirit.
With a smooth mouthfeel, even at a still strength 48% ABV (most tequilas are diluted to 38-40% ABV), Madre Tequila offers a full bodied, sweet agave flavor that can shine through in a wide range of cocktails, or be savored when slowly sipped neat. Aromas of raw agave with a hint of citrus evolve on the palate into notes of caramelized agave and minerality.
Chris Stephenson, co-founder of Madre Mezcal shared “our original vision for Madre Tequila was to create a product with the same characteristics of artisanal craftsmanship as our mezcals. Finding a partner that was aligned to this vision and ethos was not easy, but fortunately, we found the Padilla family distillery, who shares our goal of honoring the agave in a beautiful natural spirit.”
In addition to careful craft, the conditions of the land are what provides Madre Tequila its natural flavors. All agaves are harvested at some of the highest elevations in Jalisco, 7,500 feet above sea level, rough conditions that lead to agaves with a higher sugar content, which naturally provide the sweetness high quality tequilas are recognized for. Once harvested, these agaves are roasted in clay brick ovens and then distilled using well water drawn from nearly 1,500 feet below surface, each step offering a natural mineral essence to the spirit.
Prior to the industrialization of tequila, which now allows additives such as glycerine, coloring and sweeteners to be included in products labeled 100% agave, all tequila was simply mezcal, made in the town of Tequila. Honoring tequila’s origins as mezcal, Madre Tequila joins a select number of brands that produce only additive-free tequila.
