Green River Distilling announced it will lay off 26 of its of its employees, effective April 1, per The Owensboro Times and other news sources.

The Owensboro distillery, which is owned by Bardstown Bourbon Company, currently employs just over 100 people. Bardstown Bourbon was acquired by Pritzker Private Capital in 2022.

A range of positions will be eliminated, per reports, from distillery warehouse workers to lab and logistics roles. A spokesperson told The Times that the layoffs are not related to spirits tariffs implemented by the Trump administration.

The spokesperson noted that many of the distillery’s contract distilling customers were cutting back on production. In addition, The Louisville Courier-Journal reported in February that some barrel making and bottling operations had shut down. In addition, Loft Spirits launched last month to serve as the parent company for both Green River and Bardstown Bourbon.

The layoffs are not expected to affect the Green River line of whiskeys.

The spokesperson, Holly Weyler, told The Times, “We are making this hard decision now to right-size our business based on current and forecasted demand. We have acted in good faith to adjust appropriately based on our projections. We are not planning additional changes at this time.”

Green River originally was founded in 1885 by J.W. McCulloch and holds the 10th-oldest distilling license in Kentucky. The brand was reintroduced in 2022 on the same property.
