Five Questions with Actor Paul Wesley
Last week, we talked with actor and Brother’s Bond Bourbon co-founder Ian Somerhalder. This week, it’s Somerhalder’s partner in whiskey, Paul Wesley.
The actor/director/producer starred with Somerhalder as Stefon Salvadore in the television series, The Vampire Diaries. Wesley also portrays James T. Kirk in the series, Star Trek: Strange New World, which streams on Paramount+.
He also has numerous film credits and directing credits during his career. Today, however, we’re here to talk whiskey with Wesley. Here goes:
What was your gateway whiskey—the one that made you love whiskey?
I really discovered whiskey when I was living in the South shooting The Vampire Diaries. I have a lot of memories of flying back and forth between L.A. and Atlanta. Delta flights always had Woodford Reserve, and it became a ritual for me. And, of course, there were plenty of nights on and off set where Ian and I would sit and try all kinds of whiskey. That’s where I really developed my palate and honestly when we came up with the idea for Brother’s Bond.
What is your favorite part of the selection and blending process?
For me, it’s about precision. I feel lucky that we are able to take the time and spend months and months blending and fine-tuning until we get something that Ian and I both really love before we release it. We are always searching to find that perfect balance of smoothness and complexity for each of our Whiskeys. I think we have found a process that’s both scientific, yet allows us to be creative.
What trends do you believe are forthcoming in the spirits industry?
I think we’re going to see a greater appreciation for craftsmanship and authenticity. Consumers are becoming more educated about what’s in their glass, and they want something real—something with a story. Sustainability will also be a major focus. At Brother’s Bond, we’re working on regenerative practices because we want to create a legacy that’s good for both the palate and the planet.
Other than your own brand, do you currently have a favorite bourbon, whiskey, or other spirit?
I always admire craftsmanship in other brands, especially ones that embrace innovation while respecting tradition. That said, Brother’s Bond really is my go-to—it’s everything I want in a bourbon. But if I’m exploring, I might gravitate toward a well-aged scotch or a really well-made rye whiskey.
Neat, rocks, or cocktail?
I’m a neat guy most of the time—that’s how you really are able to taste a good bourbon. On occasion, I’ll do rocks, especially with something higher proof like our Cask Strength. And while I’m not typically a cocktail drinker, I can’t say no to a perfectly made Old Fashioned. It’s a classic for a reason.
