The Toasts Not Tariffs Coalition announced that the Associated Cooperage Industries Association of America (ACIA) and the Virginia Spirits Association (VSA) have joined the growing list of members, bringing the total number to 52 associations.

Tariffs on U.S., EU and UK spirits and wines that were imposed in connection with the steel and aluminum and World Trade Organization (WTO) large civil aircraft disputes are currently suspended.

Absent agreements to secure the tariffs’ removal in both trade disputes, the EU will reimpose and double the tariff on American whiskey to 50% on March 31, 2025, as part of the steel and aluminum dispute, and tariffs related to the WTO large civil aircraft dispute will return in July 2026.

“In less than three months, the EU’s tariffs on American whiskeys will return at a massive 50% rate,” the coalition said in a statement. “Now more than ever, it’s imperative that the entire beverage alcohol industry join our voices together to send a strong and unified message that tariffs on beverage alcohol products must come to an immediate end.”

Toasts Not Tariffs Coalition members represent the entire three-tier system of the U.S. alcohol industry including distillers and vintners who make the products, importers and wholesalers who distribute the products, and liquor stores and restaurants that sell the products. The coalition also includes related industries that opposed tariffs on beverage alcohol. See the full list here.

“Tariffs on distilled spirits and wines affect American cooperages that supply barrels to distillers here in the U.S. and worldwide,” Melissa Zoeller, executive director, ACIA, said. “We are joining the Toast Not Tariffs Coalition to ensure our voice is heard and to highlight the devastating wide-ranging downstream economic impacts of tariffs on wines and spirits.”

The coalition continues to urge the U.S. government to secure agreements with the EU and UK to permanently remove tariffs on U.S., UK and EU spirits and wines and ensure new tariffs are not imposed.

“The beverage alcohol sector supports millions of good-paying jobs in every state, including more than 18,000 in Virginia,” Don Tierney, executive director, VSA, said. “Reimposing these tariffs will threaten those jobs.”
