Westland Whiskey Garryana Single Malt 9 bottle lifestyle

On the heels of ranking #3 in Whisky Advocate’s Top 20 Whiskies in 2023 with the eighth edition of Garryana American Single Malt, Westland Whiskey announced the release of the ninth edition of the whiskey.

Released annually, the Garryana expressions showcase the provenance of the Pacific Northwest through the use of Quercus garryana, a rare oak indigenous to the region, and is the founding expression of Westland’s Outpost Range, which celebrates the central ingredients that comprise single malt whiskey – barley, peat and oak.

In anticipation of the excitement for the next edition of Garryana (50% ABV, 700ml, $149.99 SRP; 6,600 bottles), this newest version can be purchased now via Westland’s online shop, and will arrive at retailers nationwide beginning Friday, November 15.

Exploration is at the heart of all that Westland produces; the ninth edition of Garryana American Single Malt is no exception. Garryana Edition 9 builds on the success of the eighth edition by continuing to explore the unique, spice-driven characteristics of Garryana casks, balanced with Spanish Sherry, for the first time introducing Oloroso casks in contrast with PX casks in past editions.

“Garryana Edition 9 contrasts and comments on its predecessor,” Shane Armstrong, Westland’s Master Blender, said in a news release. “Full-term Oloroso Butts were used and draw an entirely different portrait than the PX of past versions. The dry and oxidized style of Oloroso shows up in a nuanced savory aspect, providing an accentuating conduit for Garry Oak’s direct current. This combination is a first for us and based on how this shaped up – it won’t be the last.”

Westland’s Outpost Range of American Single Malt Whiskeys features three limited-edition expressions that are released annually – Garryana, Colere, and Solum. As a pioneer of the category and a founding member of the American Single Malt Whiskey Commission, Westland has pushed for the final ratification of the category from the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau (TTB), which is expected to be announced this fall.

Founded in 2010 and acquired by Remy-Cointreau in 2017, Seattle’s Westland Distillery brings a new and uniquely American voice to the world of single malt whiskey by exploring possibilities that have been ignored for generations. Along the way, Westland started the American Single Malt Whiskey Commission. All of Westland’s expressions are distilled at the Seattle distillery from 100% malted barley and fermented with a unique Belgian Saison brewer’s yeast before maturing in one of a variety of cask types, including new American oak, ex-Bourbon, ex-Sherry, and Garry Oak, to name a few.
