Old Potrero Debuts New California Cellar Series
San Francisco-based Old Potrero announced the release of its new California Cellar Series – two premium wine-cask finished rye whiskeys. The highly allocated Old Potrero Straight Rye Whiskey Finished in Silver Oak Wine Barrels (56.6% ABV, 700ml, $99.99 SRP) and Old Potrero Toasted Barrel Rye Whiskey Finished in Sonoma Portworks Wine Barrels (56.8% ABV, 700ml, $99.99 SRP) arrive on shelves this month just in time for wine crush throughout the state.
“Old Potrero has always been influenced by its home state’s exceptional wine – including in our choice of 24-month air-dried, extra-fine grain barrels, which we’ve used since the first batch was released,” Master Distiller Bruce Joseph said in a news release. “It was a natural evolution to bring our exceptional rye whiskey together with some of California’s finest wine producers to further influence the rich flavors of the spirit.”
Straight Rye Whiskey Finished in Silver Oak Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon American Oak Barrels (56.6% ABV, 700ml, $99.99 SRP): Old Potrero Straight Rye Whiskey, aged for more than 6 years, is finished in Silver Oak Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon American Oak Barrels for 5 months.
“Creating something new from age-old crafts like winemaking and distillation requires curiosity,” Nate Weis, Vice President of Winegrowing at Silver Oak, said. “Silver Oak and the new Old Potrero Whiskey California Series share this philosophy through our mutual passion for American oak.”
Toasted Barrel Rye Whiskey Finished in Sonoma Portworks Wine Petite Sirah Port Barrels (56.8% ABV, 700ml, $99.99 SRP): Old Potrero Toasted Barrel Rye Whiskey aged over 5 years and finished in Sonoma Portworks Petite Sirah Port Barrels for 17 months.
“It is exciting to see how well our products meld together,” Deneice Knotts, Sonoma Portworks’ Portmaker, said. “When we recycle our barrels after aging our ports and pass them to Old Potrero, the rye whiskey benefits from the notes of cherry, dried fruit, and cinnamon spice from the ports.”
These are the first two Old Potrero collaborations with California wineries, with more planned for the future. Additional collaborations with white wine and beer barrel finishes will launch in 2025 as part of Old Potrero’s Golden State program, celebrating and aligning the state’s original rye whiskey with other California producers.

About Old Potrero
Old Potrero Rye Whiskey is a testament to the return of pot-distilled whiskey in the United States. Created by Fritz Maytag, the man who sparked the craft beer movement with his purchase of Anchor Brewing in 1965 and the founder of the original Anchor Distilling Co., now Hotaling & Co., Old Potrero whiskies are distilled in a small copper pot stills at the Hotaling & Co. Distillery in San Francisco from a mash of 100% rye malt.
