Castle & Key Releases Cask Strength Wheated Bourbon
Castle & Key Distillery announced the release of its new Cask Strength Wheated Bourbon (52.8% ABV; $60 SRP). This milestone release marks the 10th year since the purchase of the property, formerly the Old Taylor Distillery, which the team revitalized into the immersive distillery and hospitality experience it’s known for today.
Aged seven years, the Cask Strength Wheated Bourbon is the oldest age-stated product from the distillery and the second wheated bourbon in the portfolio. The new release will be available in the following states: Arkansas, California, Connecticut, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas City, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Massachusetts, Missouri, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Washington State, and Wisconsin.
Blended from hand selected barrels that were laid down within the inaugural year of production, the Cask Strength Wheated Bourbon is composed of 73% locally grown non GMO white corn, 10% winter wheat, and 17% malted barley before being barreled at 107 proof. Just 109 barrels are being released.
“Our Cask Strength Wheated Bourbon gives the most genuine and pure representation of its mashbill,” Brett Connors, Lead Blender, Castle & Key Distillery, said in a news release. “White winter wheat differs from the traditional red wheat usually used in bourbon in color, protein content and gluten development, which has the ability to affect flavor. The result is a ‘wheater’ that highlights a depth and maturity of seven years in the barrel, while retaining the sweet roundness imparted by the white winter wheat. It shines without dilution, but can still be enjoyed in your favorite cocktail.”
“In 2014 when we began restoring The Old Taylor Distillery — which had fallen to ruin after decades of neglect — we were forward thinking about developing products that fit our broader vision,” Will Arvin, Co-Founder Castle & Key, said. “The new Cask Strength Wheated Bourbon is already a favorite of our distillers, warehouse teams, and ownership alike. We invite you to enjoy this coveted blend to mark the tenth anniversary of the restoration of a bourbon icon and continued celebration of our unique Kentucky spirits.”
