New Habitation Velier Rum Series Released
Habitation Velier is a new rum series by Velier that features exclusive bottlings made through partnerships with some of the top rum producers in the world. In this way, Velier acts as a “dependent bottler,” working together with distilleries directly, in contrast with independent sourcing from the bulk rum trade.
Here are descriptions of the distilleries and rums included in the Habitation Velier series :
HAMPDEN ESTATE
Hampden currently has six operational double retort pot stills, which combined have a capacity of 27,000 barrels. Hampden HGML (‘“Hampden George Macfarquhar Lawson”) was originally intended as a blending rum to be sold on the export market. It demonstrates high aromatic concentration and increased intensity showing a complex mix of esters with notes of ripened tropical fruits like banana and pineapple).
Aged for four years in ex-Bourbon cask in the tropical conditions of the distillery and bottled au naturel at cask strength with no dilution, additives, sugar or artifice. Two casks, Nos. 132 and 137, are part of the Habitation Velier series.
LONG POND
To produce their rum, Long Pond uses five Vendôme and John Dore alembics, four with a capacity of 3,500 gallons and one with a capacity of 1,479 gallons.
Long Pond STCE (“Simon Thompson Cambridge Estate”) is a historic mark of the defunct Cambridge Estate which has been continued to be produced at Long Pond distillery. Aged for 15 years in ex-Bourbon cask the tropical conditions of the distillery and bottled au naturel at cask strength with no dilution, additives, sugar or artifice.
Two casks, Nos. 5 and 10, are part of the series.
AMRUT
Famous for its malt whisky, Amrut produces its spirits through double distillation on their pot stills. The first distillation is done on their wash still with a capacity of 6,500 liters. It is then transferred to the spirit still, which holds 8,000 liters, and comes off the still at 80% abv after lengthy contact with the copper in their unique teardrop-shaped reflux bowl.
Founded in 1948 in Bangalore, South India, Amrut has been celebrated globally for its unique single malts. Although only made once per year in very small quantities, Amrut has also been producing rum from jaggery for over 60 years.
Jaggery is an unrefined, ancestral style of sugar made by pressing sugarcane and allowing the sediment to settle. The clear liquid is strained off and boiled in large, shallow-bottomed pans to concentration until it forms a soft paste, which is then dried and often sold in bricks locally. Amrut is the first and only distillery to obtain a specific license to produce this type of rum.
This single cask, Cask No. 227, was produced entirely from fermented jaggery, distilled using pot still distillation techniques before it was aged in cask for seven tropical years in ex-bourbon casks. Bottled au naturel at cask strength with no dilution, additives, sugar or artifice.
