Coalition Whiskey to Release Trio of 100% Straight Rye Whiskeys Finished in Bordeaux Barrels
Coalition Whiskey announced the release of Coalition Kentucky Straight Rye, a series of three whiskey expressions finished in three different Bordeaux wine barrels with a 100% rye mashbill.
A new company, Coalition partnered with Kentucky Artisan Distillery’s Steve Thompson and veteran wine maker Ludwig Vanneron to create the ryes, according to a news release.
The three expressions are: rye finished in Margaux Barriques (90.8 proof); finished in Pauillac Barriques (92.6 proof), and finished in Sauternes Barriques (94.2 proof). In addition, Coalition will offer bottles of the original base rye whiskey at barrel proof (108.8 proof).
“A 100% rye whiskey is a true rarity in the industry,” Steve Thompson, owner of Kentucky Artisan Distillery, said in the news release. “While most rye whiskies use malted barley or added corn, Coalition Whiskey is made completely from rye. It’s a more expensive way to go, but there was truly no other way to create that truly deep, rich and spicy flavor we knew would be the ideal match for our velvety Bordeaux wine barrel finishing.”
Expressions finished in Bordeaux wine barrels retail at $90 SRP, with the barrel proof at $130. Bottles will be available in New York, New Jersey, California, Florida, Kentucky, Illinois and Colorado.
