It Came Down to Rare Breed vs. Old Forester 1920: Which One Came Out on Top?
The $41-$60 taste-off wrapped up with the winners from both legs staring each other down in a taste-off. It was Rare Breed, the winner from tasting No. 1, versus Old Forester 1920, the victor in tasting No. 2.
And it was close. Really, really close. But Rare Breed was the winner by a nose. Here are a few tasting notes:
Rare Breed nose: “I just love that cornbread, that vanilla, that honey. This nose is just soaked in honey.”
Old Forester 1920: “Lot of cherry pie, molasses. Just a touch of banana.”
Verdict: Draw
Rare Breed palate: “Rare Breed is bringing it tonight. It’s jumping around on my palate going on the roof tickling it all around. There is a beautiful spice dominating the back end of my pilot. Gorgeous cornbread layering the middle. Honey tickling the tip of my palate. It is so good. Jumps up to the top of my palate and drips down the jaw line. That is showing a lot of action on the palate.”
Old Forester 1920 palate: “Completely different approach. Jumping on the front of the tongue with sweetness, on the back with some fried pie crust. Hitting just a little bit of spice but it’s really concentrated. Focused on a couple areas of the palate. It’s really intense.”
Verdict: Rare Breed, for its complexity on the palate.
Rare Breed also stood up slightly better to adding a couple of drops of water, which sealed the victory.
