Fake News Hits Alcohol in Pandemic - Fred Minnick

Fake News Hits Alcohol in Pandemic

Bourbon

April 1, 2020

Fake News hit the alcohol industry this week, as memes and websites claimed alcohol sales are ceasing or liquor stores are closing in Indiana, Georgia, Illinois, Florida, Virginia, North Carolina and others.

Facebook flagged these as false to slow the spread of the fake news, while some websites are claiming these were actually “pranks.”

But the alcohol industry isn’t laughing.

Wine & Spirits Wholesalers of America issued a fake news advisory, saying these sites profit through bad information and social media. In order to end the flow of fake news, WSWA suggested:

1. Don’t pass this information onto friends via text, or social media or “word of mouth” until you verify the claim with your Governor’s website, or other verified news agencies (NBC, CBS, ABC, and trusted local news sites/publications)

2. Know that 37 states deemed alcohol sales essential.

3. If you come across a site broadcasting “false or fake news” on the closing of liquor or alcohol retail, please send it to (INFO@WSWA.ORG)

Here is my take: Assholes rise up in times like this. If you see fake news, make sure you report it in the proper channels. Let the social media providers know and comment about it being fake, using real facts.

We can’t let assholes own the feeds.
