When I travel, I look for interesting faces. My favorite photos from Argentina, Iraq, Nicaragua and St. Lucia are faces that tell stories. I look for wrinkles, eyes and even teeth, or lack thereof, to stand out in a photo.

I found this man struggling to light a cigarette in Belfast, Ireland. I asked if I could photograph him, expecting to get a kick in the groin, but he said yes. And, I snapped every attempt of him trying to light the smoke stick. With a hurt hand and shaky arms, he thumbed the lighter over and over until finally a spark hit is cigarette. There was a look of joy on his face when it lit. His first puff was one of relief and then a sudden quiet sadness over took him. Then, he was back to puffing, where nothing but joy were in his aging blue eyes.
